think iPods, mobile phones etc

We live in an increasingly visual, digital & technological age these days and one of the areas where these three characteristics come together is in video. Most tech devices (think iPods, mobile phones etc.) people use these days have video capabilities and most are using glorious High Definition (HD) recording. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of HD camcorders on the market. Many still photo cameras also have video capability, including high-end DSLR cameras. The latter are, in fact, seen by many amateur (and some professional) videographers as more affordable solutions than their big brothers the pro video camera.iphone data recovery software for windows
So what is happening with all this footage? Much ends up on video hosting sites such as Youtube or Vimeo – a site used more by keen amateurs, semi-professionals and full on professional videographers. Some is just shown to relatives and friends in much the same way a slide show may have been 20-30 years ago. Another major segment is the commercial area such as advertisements & weddings.
The hardware & software industries have fallen over themselves over the last few years to give the consumer ways of editing this footage in a more professional way than merely cutting and joining clips and maybe adding a voiceover or music as audio. Some of the factors that have allowed and encouraged this are:
  • Development of faster CPUs – often with more than a single core allowing processing jobs to be spread around without overloading the system. Video editing is a known resource hog – imagine the poor old computer trying to rearrange and track changes to all those moving pixels
  • Development of 64 bit OS that allow usage of higher amounts of RAM
  • Development of more efficient and reliable RAM componentsfree data recovery software
  • Development of video cards carrying their own ever increasing supply of RAM
  • Development of software which takes full advantage of these hardware changes
  • A growing demand from consumers to be able to make their amateur videos look more like those done by professionals and the reciprocal desire by the software manufacturers to supply this need

So where are we up to with all this? On the market at the moment are many video editing packages that offer different levels of video editing capabilities. Some of the main players are those that have previously only serviced professional level editors but now cater for the prosumer and general consumer – Adobe, Sony and Apple are all in this basket.
Let’s have a quick look at some of the offerings starting at the top (professional packages) and working down. These packages range in price but are all around or over $1000
