Your Office in the Cloud

I, like many millions of others, use Microsoft Office. A couple of years ago I upgraded to Office 2007 and because my company is a Microsoft Partner (in other words, all office PCs run Windows and Office) I was able to purchase, at a discounted price, Office 2010 for my daughter’s laptop. iphone data recovery app

I wish our company would upgrade as quickly — we are still using Windows XP, Office XP and IE 6!

Perhaps the opportunity will come sooner than I’d hoped. Microsoft will soon be launching “Office 365” — effectively an online version of Office. Apart from the fact that this is in direct competition with Google Apps, I find this an interesting move. It costs money of course, but it means you will never have to upgrade your installation on your PC. In fact there won’t be an installation on your PC — the software and processing will be done on Microsoft’s servers. I’m sure Microsoft have done their sums — after all Office is a real cash cow for Microsoft — with an estimated 400 million users, it generates some $24bn per year.

Somehow I doubt that we will move to this system anytime soon — like many companies ours is sometimes slow to move. Still, it’s nice to dream.
